Many “dictionaries of proverbs” try to be something they are not. They have flashy pictures or “cutesy” illustrations that try to explain a proverb. This text has neither. It is exactly what it purports to be, a dictionary, including approximately 2,500 proverbs in English and Spanish. It has the look and feel of a dictionary, and few bells or whistles. The proverbs included range from archaic biblical proverbs such as “He who blames would buy” (23) and literary citations such as “He who has lost his credit is dead to the world” (38) (which the author links to a passage in Shakespeare) to more current and well-known proverbs such as “Strike while the iron is hot” (99). When possible, the author has given a reference, either to the literary source, for example, the Bible, or to the original text, often in Latin or another ancient or modern language. The amount of information contained in this volume and the diversity of the proverbs included are impressive. I could not think of a proverb that was not included.
This text would seem to be a useful tool for a literature class. Many expressions do not translate well because they are indeed proverbs and therefore defy a literal translation. Students often struggle to make sense of proverbs since they are not sure how to relate to them. A student could use this dictionary of proverbs when confronted with an expression that does not seem to make sense when taken at face value.
